Circumscription in a Modal Logic

چکیده

In this paper, we extend circumscription [McCarthy, 80] to a propositional modal logic of knowledge of one agent. Instead of circumscribing a predicate, we circumscribe the knowledge operator "K" in a formula. In order to have a nontrivial circumscription schema, we extend $5 modal logic of knowledge by adding another modality "Val" and a universal quantifier over base sentences (sentences which do not contain modality). Intuitively, "Val(P)" means that P is a valid formula. It turns out that by circumscribing the knowledge operator in a formula, we completely characterize the maximally ignorant models of the formula (models of the formula where agents have minimal knowledge).

Minimal Belief and Negation as Failure

Fangzhen Lin and Yoav Shoham deened a propositional nonmonotonic logic which uses two independent modal operators. One of them represents minimal knowledge, the other is related to the ideas of justiication (as understood in default logic) and of negation as failure. We describe a simpliied version of that system, show how quantiiers can be included in it, and study its relation to circumscript...

From Answer Set Logic Programming to Circumscription via Logic of GK

We rst embed Pearce s equilibrium logic and Ferraris s propositional general logic programs in Lin and Shoham s logic of GK a nonmonotonic modal logic that has been shown to include as special cases both Reiter s default logic in the propositional case and Moore s autoepistemic logic From this embedding we obtain a mapping from Ferraris s propositional general logic programs to circumscription ...

Circumscription by Inference Rules with Priority

This paper shows how to express circumscription in terms of priority logic, where a theory consists of a set of logic programming like (monotonic) inference rules and a priority relation among them. Priorities determine when such an inference rule can or cannot be applied. Specifically, we show that circumscribing any existential quantifier free theory can be described precisely by a process of...

A The Complexity of Reasoning for Fragments of Autoepistemic Logic

Non-monotonic logics are among the most important calculi in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning. Autoepistemic logic, introduced 1985 by Moore [Moore 1985], is one of the most prominent non-monotonic logics. It was originally created to overcome difficulties present in the non-monotonic modal logics proposed by McDermott and Doyle [McDermott and Doyle 1980], but was also shown t...

Honesty in Partial Logic

We propose an epistemic logic in which knowledge is fully introspective and implies truth, although truth need not imply epistemic possibility. The logic is presented in sequential format and is interpreted in a natural class of partial models, called balloon models. We examine the notions of honesty and circumscription in this logic: What is the state of an agent that ‘only knows φ’ and which ...
